The exhaust pipe is a necessity in any fossil-fuel burning car. As a result of the combustion process, CO2 is naturally produced from a car’s engine and it must be vented somewhere to avoid asphyxiating the driver. Some manufacturers have taken this as a cue to stylize their engine gas exits, the question is, which have succeeded in making theirs the most interesting?
The classic 850s had a distinctive rectangular tip which mirrored the shape of the car
‘80s Bimmers had them just slightly off-center because, well, reasons. German reasons.
What are the best/worst/most distinctive exhaust pipes and tips in the automotive world?

The best exhaust treatment I’ve ever seen has to be the 1952 Plymouth Explorer Ghia concept:

I always liked the old fbody camaro exhausts. The wide rectangular ones.

Wow. That is amazing! Just don’t try to load the trunk with the engine running...

Zonda allll daaaaaay
It reminds me of the batmobile afterburner.

I love the, as I call it, “double barrel” exhaust ze Germans like to use.
I can’t stand most of the fakers automakers seem to be obsessed with now.
It’s really annoying on the Fusion because the 2.5L and 1.5T get real exhaust tips, but the 2.0T gets these fake ones.

Like this?

Something something combustion reaction (that should be balanced, it’s been awhile since gen chem, disregard the ChemE degree)

Yeah, yeah, I took AP Chem this year and then promptly got rid of all my knowledge...

Always been a fan of the Sagaris’ bonkers side exit pipes.

No classic squiggle pipe love?
![]() 08/04/2016 at 21:47 |

How’d you do? I assume results are out? (if you’d rather not share that’s cool, I understand) I got a 4 on it, back when I took AP chem in 2006/2007.

YESSSSS! Practically a tail-mounted Gatling gun...
![]() 08/04/2016 at 21:48 |

Ugh, yes. I’ve always wondered why they are so steeply raked on the 155 Touring cars though, does it have to do with regulations or just being cool?

Even BeamNG Drive is getting in on the love!
![]() 08/04/2016 at 21:50 |

The fake tips are just awful. Why do that when the aforementioned simple twin pipes are just fine?
![]() 08/04/2016 at 21:51 |
|
Haha, no problem. I too got a 4, not bad considering that I was battling three other AP tests in the same week :P
![]() 08/04/2016 at 21:56 |

What isn’t bonkers on the Sagaris? Crazy hood slats, funky clear wing, the almighty Speed Six , and an interior more fit for cephalopods rather than humans.

I like it!
Why does the badge say 2400 though?

Nice, I only took a total of 5 AP classes in high school. That doesn't sound fun at all.

I’m not sure if you’re familiar with BeamNG’s vehicle selection but none of it is actually licensed, thus this is just a recreation of the E23 7 Series named in-game as the ‘ETK I Series’ with trim levels ranging from 2400 (2.4 I6) to 3400i (fuel injected 3.4 I6) and 2400i TT (fuel injection and twin turbos). I kind of love the generic models because the devs do a great job of conjuring up a certain image about their cars. This one even has a 190e Evo-esque config!

It can be, the classes themselves are really great because I feel like I am able to learn a lot and as classmates we can really bond over the course material since we’re all suffering together. I actually took five courses last year (junior year) but only tested for four since our AP Chinese class was a joke...

Oddly asymmetrical, but I like it!

Then there’s Volvo’s weird dual muffler single exit design from the late ‘90s which EL_ULY pointed out ...

The TVRs are probably in this thread already but anything central and up high is rad. Like the Zonda.

I think my personal favorite would have to be the oval quad tips on the W220/C215 AMGs. Super classy, totally makes the rear end, and provides just enough of a hint to those not in the know that it ain’t no regular Benz.

Mclaren yes, Porsche no. I can’t say I’m a fan of that exhaust.

Viper exhausts under the doors are the best. Especially in black trim on the TA.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The front/side exit exhaust totally does it for me. I’m beyond happy that most people don’t like the car, so it’s depreciating into territory that I can afford.

Nice! Yeah I’ve never seen beamng other than the occasional post here before.
God I love those mono block style wheels on that 190. Perfect for 90s cars.
![]() 08/05/2016 at 00:42 |

Agreed. Especially on German cars.
I personally love playing BeamNG Drive, the cars act so realistically that it’s fun to hoon things like the land barge around a rally course and watch it bounce and roll everywhere or try to tackle an obstacle course as fast as you can with the fastest car in the game.

Pc game I’m guessing?
![]() 08/05/2016 at 01:50 |
|
Yeah, although I can manage to play it on about the lowest-spec of PCs and it still seems to do fine. Graphics are the main limitation for me, Intel’s built-in stuff just isn’t up to snuff despite the processors and memory all being there.
![]() 08/05/2016 at 08:12 |

dual function: Aiming the exhausts up like that allowed the car to meet track side noise limits worth less restrictive mufflers, the hot exhaust gases rising at the rear of the car also provided a low pressure zone right behind the wing, which to laminarize the airflow off the back of the car and increase the wing efficiency.
![]() 08/05/2016 at 09:12 |
|
That seems like a packaging fail. Or maybe I just don’t appreciate double muffled exhaust.
![]() 08/05/2016 at 11:27 |
|
I’m really not sure why they did it since on dual-tip versions the set-up is the same, only the left muffler has an exit as well. Scandinavian modesty I guess? They needed two mufflers but only wanted one tip?

I like the 80s BMWs exhausts best, but you beat me to it in the OP.
Here are a few others I like.

Top
The Sagaris, Zonda and AMGs are great as well - but they’ve already been posted.

I was waiting for an LFA! The Shelby is pretty much iconic, and the Bosozoku is just bonkers...I wonder how hot those pipes must get?
![]() 08/05/2016 at 13:43 |
|
If I remember correctly, the Bosozoku pipes are functional since the normal exhaust tips on a tuned engine would exceed Japanese noise regulations - so the Bosozoku pipes prevent that.
Obviously that’s not the main reason why they exist. xP
![]() 08/05/2016 at 13:44 |

Other than the bend at the bottom not very hot at all
![]() 08/05/2016 at 13:50 |

You’re replacing an expensive muffler and tip (if you wanted it to look like that ) with a one dollar in mold decoration and 95% of people don't know the difference.
![]() 08/05/2016 at 14:21 |
|
Or you could just tuck them under the bumper like Odysseys do. 95% of the population doesn’t care anyway.
